Symbolic Flight

Beyond The Moving Map...

3.0 is in heavy testing at the moment. The biggest obstacle to release is actually paperwork: manual, patent filings. The next biggest is Garmin support.

Two things of interest right now: we do a fair amount of our testing with Microsoft Flight Simulator X. You can do the same thing using Peter Dowson's FSUIPC and Johan Franson's GpsGate. We'll be posting a new page soon that details how to do it.

Second, we are working on full Garmin support for 3.0. But you can use Franson GpsGate to connect Symbolic Flight 2.80 to any Garmin aviation GPS. I recently spent several days using a 696 with Symbolic Flight and it worked perfectly. This will make Kenny Jackel happy, for one.

3.0 will also lower the bar for computing power required--the Q1U is much happier than it was with 2.8, and it is not even an Atom-based computer.

There is a new candidate for all-in-one device, though: the Viliv X70. We have the high-end version with built-in Gps and 3G modem and 128GB SSD. Cost? $1200 retail. Waiting for Windows 7 upgrade but Vista works as well. This device is literally a 'throw it in the flight bag' solution. It still doesn't have 1000 nits of brightness, but we are working on a clip-on hood for sunny days. It lasts about 3 hours on a battery and has a car charger--which is the only cord (yipppeee). We'll post a new video in the next few weeks showing it in the air--now that the Bonanza is back out of the shop.
